NowThe Show
Y Ya Lo Viste? is a podcast about Spanish-Language TV for people who are tired of the algorithm handing them the same five shows. Each season we cover one series — something you can stream right now, something that flew under the radar unless you were already watching TV in Spanish — and we watch it together, episode by episode.
Season 1 is Mentiras, La Serie — a Mexican jukebox musical set in the 1980s that became one of the most-watched titles on Amazon Prime Video México. It deserves a bigger audience. We're starting with you.
Rosalinda
Rosalinda grew up in Waco, Texas and studied at UT Austin, where she's been based ever since. By day she heads the Newcomers Academy at her high school, teaching students who have just migrated to the US and are learning English. She grew up on Mexican television and 80s pop ballads, and has been rewatching her favorites — and introducing them to the right people — ever since.
Matthew
Matthew grew up in San Antonio and now lives in San Francisco, where he works in IT and spends the rest of his time chasing good music and a good story. He came to Spanish-language TV later than he'd like to admit — it wasn't until he rewatched Casa de las Flores with Rosalinda that something clicked, and he realized how much he'd been missing. He's been catching up fast ever since.
Our Story
We met in 2012 at UT Austin — Rosalinda was two years ahead, Matthew was a freshman who had just joined a service fraternity and got placed as her little. We've been best friends ever since.
When the pandemic hit, we started doing weekly video calls. The original plan was to finally launch the podcast we'd always talked about. We recorded some episodes, barely got them into an editing app, and never put a single one online. But somewhere along the way we realized it didn't matter — we still had something to look forward to every week during one of the hardest stretches either of us had lived through. The calls kept going.
They still haven't stopped. We're on FaceTime for hours at a time, talking about whatever we're watching, listening to, reading, or obsessing over. Last year Rosalinda rewatched Casa de las Flores with Matthew, and something clicked for him — he hadn't realized how much Spanish-language TV had evolved since the days of watching whatever his grandma had on. That conversation turned into more shows, more late-night recommendations, and eventually this.
Y Ya Lo Viste? is the podcast we tried to make in 2020. We just needed the right show to start with.
